After the war was over, the children were often abandoned in the facilities. The facilities discovered by Allied troops often were populated by only a few pregnant and nursing mothers, accompanied by many children. Some children were adopted by Allied soldiers. They were the lucky ones. Those not adopted were turned over to the countries. Now, the countries didn't like them too much, as they were reminders of the war and of Hitler, and as such, they often didn't have very nice lives. Some of the countries, Norway in particular, even went as far as to blame the children for the war. Their mothers were seen as insane for participating in the program, so it was decided that the children must also be insane, so some of them were committed to mental wards. These were not normal mental wards. These were horror movie level mental wards, which is where the movies got the ideas from. They were chained to beds for days at a time. They weren't allowed visitors, and were given only clothes and food. Of those put up for adoption, only a fraction ended up in normal homes with normal families. Most of the children ended up in abusive homes, where they were beaten and neglected. "Nazi Brat" was one of the nicer (and cleaner) insults thrown at the young children. Sometimes, their skin was scrubbed off with acid to 'clean them', or they were put on LSD as an experiment.
